I had a discussion with one of my client today over the length of the website. There are a lot of misconception regarding the web page’s length and width. So I thought I should clear those my writing about this in this article.
1. Long and Quality Content is the key to SEO
If we look at basics of the SEO, the content is the heart of the website. If the content is with reference to your web page subject and its lengthy then search engines like google, yahoo, bing give it more importance. You can add your keywords in correct propotion in the website. So having lengthy web page is good. Just make sure that the content should be of quality and appropriate to your website.
2. Avoid Horizontal Scrolls.
Make sure that the website design fits in most of the resolution and the users don’t have to scroll the website horizontally. Our mouse is designed to do vertical scroll by default through our website. So you to scroll horizontally we have to move our mouse over to the horizontal scroll which irritates if we have to every time and the view is also not quite good and user face difficulty in reading it. So avoid horizontal scrolls.
3. Make sure the User identifies your web page is lengthy and needs to scroll down.
Some times it happens that the user do not know that there is content down the page and he needs to scroll. This happens due to extra space which is of same color of your websites background. If you keep the background of your content different from the background of your webpage then the user can easily grasp that there is more content down the line.
if you have 2 or 3 column design then you can make sure that the levels of column are at different level or has an border because of which user can understand there is more content and he needs to scroll.
4. Ask the user to scroll
There is nothing wrong in asking your users to scroll. Its good to have floating button at the bottom of the screen rather just having know more or read more link as this will not disturb the user while reading but will always stay at the bottom of the screen no matter how much you scroll. Its also looks good and matches with design and catches your attention easily.
You can also ask to scroll by providing user a reason to do so. You can say “Scroll Down for important information” or “Scroll down to know more about offer” etc which will encourage the client to scroll.
In short Long pages do work if the user knows he can scroll and if you provide him a good reason to do so.
Let me know your feedback over the same. As this will help all of us in how we can make better UI in order to make our websites convert more visitors into customers.
As the heading suggests, we receive such inquiries at least once in a month. So it is important to understand what exactly you want from website. It is not necessary for every business to have login page or functionality. It depends on what you want from your website. If you need a static brochure website then you don’t need any login page in this.
A Login system is needed when you want to protect some information and would like to provide access to certain people.
The real question is to understand “What functionalities do you want in your website ?” The login page is just a part of it. Do you need to integrate any automated system such Online Booking, CRM or Ecommerce.
Say you need Online Booking system and you have to store customer information which is something you need to protect and should give access to limited and responsible people of your staff.
Its not that you need a login system but you need to tell your designer or developer what functionality exactly you want and should explain him regarding that rather than saying I need a login system.
This will make developers work easy and also yours.
I hope this information will help.
This might sound a very silly question to most of you but people in Vidharbha or say who are from remote areas still don’t know what internet is ? I mean people of our generation knows this but what about our fathers generation, they still don’t know anything about internet. I mean very few know about what it is and what it does ?
In a city like Akola, where my or younger generation use internet in their day to day life but they use it mainly for sending emails, searching for jobs etc., but not for services or products they need. So there are people who ask one simple question “Do I really need website ?”
Well it really depends on what business you do ? Say your audience is farmers who hardly uses internet. In that case its not that necessary but this trend can be changed at any point of time. If you do not provide this facility then how will you know that your audience is going to accept it. The time has changed a lot, I never thought of using a Card to do payment at a shop in Akola but the merchants have provided this facility and there a lot of people of are using it and the number is increasing.
Second point is that website is your another channel for marketing/advertising and selling your products and services and that to at very low cost as compared to traditional marketing. By having your website you open your business to serve clients from all over the world. Well this will be very absurd to say but yes where you are serving only Maharashtra now you will be serving complete India.
While selling products or services, we make sure that we utilize all the paths, channels then why we should leave this new route which is cheap and full of opportunity. Every business should think about it and should take benefit of this opportunity or else we will be left behind by our competitors. Another thing is that website provides your business a elegant and very professional look.
CMS a very popular word in the space of Website Development. Well, CMS means Content Management System.
In simple words, CMS is a system which allows you to change the content of your website. Today a lot of advance CMS are available which allows you to add new pages to your website, change the images of your website and you can also change the font, size and styling of your words.
There are various companies which provides CMS either free or paid. Opensource CMS are in very demand as you dont have to pay anything extra for this. What you have to pay is to a developer to integrate it in your website.
Joomla, Drupal, WordPress, Typo III all are opensource CMS which are widely used. WordPress is an emerging and very powerful CMS and very famous among developers. Many of you might be knowing that WordPress is famous for blogs and most of you might be using it.
CMS helps companies to save a lot on maintenance as you dont need to get in touch with your web design or development firm to do small changes. You can change the content of your website with a click of mouse.
Companies which needs to change the text or content of their website from time to time requires a CMS. The cost of having a CMS is high as compared to Static Website. Therefore one most introspect whether they really need a CMS or not ?
Last week, I had a meeting with one of my strong prospect. The lead was a financial investment company. During the meeting, the client told me that they are looking forward to design and develop a dynamic website. So I had started discussing with the client on the functional part of the website (functionalities they would like to have in their website). The client said that they want 6 static and 2 dynamic pages. At first I thought that client is educated in this space and looks like they had a clear idea of what they want. Later I started asking them questions on their business so that I can understand it well and could design the system well and the client refused to give any information about it.
After asking a lot many times and trying to convince them why do I need to know, I got more information from them and that was 1. they need login page with three different categories and 2. What will be the content on the home page.
Client insisted me to provide them a rough quote depending on this information and I said I need more information to quote the project. They said that they won’t be able to provide me any more information on this and I have to quote on this information only and then only they will decide whether to work with us.
After having such a frustrating discussion, I decided to write a blog on things to be taken care of while approaching a web designer as you can see that the project cost is going to vary a lot depending on their requirement. We don’t know what will be there in the login part. They wanted 3 user levels so definitely all of their roles will be different and we don’t know how much data we need to process.
Things to be taken care of while approaching a web designer
1. Purpose of Website
2. Target audience of the website.
3. Goal of Website.
4. List down the different sections you want in your website
5. Provide information on your products and services you want to display on your website.
6. Provide information on how you want your website should work (If possible provide a rough flow chart or mind map)
7. Search for similar websites (functionality wise) and give their web address to your web designer.
8. Also provide list of website you want your website to look like (not necessary to be of same category)
